MOLINE, Ill. – Steve Michalek made 42 saves on the way to his first career shutout and Matt Carey- who also had an assist- and Olivier Archambault provided the goals as the host Quad City Mallards (17-15-3) blanked the Fort Wayne Komets (18-11-2) 2-0 Sunday.
With the win, the Mallards took over sole possession of second place in the ECHL’s Midwest Division and closed within one point of the first place Komets.
Carey pounced on a Fort Wayne turnover in the slot to break a scoreless deadlock with just over 10 seconds left in the second period.
Archambault doubled the Mallard lead from the doorstep at 3:56 of the third period and Michalek did the rest. The rookie goaltender stopped a whopping 23 shots in the third period alone.
The Mallards return to action on home ice Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Kalamazoo Wings. Friday brings the return of $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X and MetroLINK College Night.
